LAGOS/Nigeria: The Headfort Foundation for Justice is set to convene a high-level virtual dialogue to mark World Press Freedom Day, spotlighting the indispensable role of independent media in advancing peace, accountability and democratic governance.
Scheduled for May 5, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. via X Space, the event— themed “Press Freedom and Peace Building: Why Independent Media Matters Now More Than Ever”—will assemble leading journalists and media professionals to examine the evolving relationship between press freedom, security, and democratic stability.
Among speakers expected at the forum are Promise Eze, a defence, security and conflict journalist; Fabian Ekeruche of the News Agency of Nigeria; Nkemdirim Patience Agwu of OGTV; and Mustapha Usman, Senior Investigative Journalist with the International Centre for Investigative Reporting.
According to the organisers, the discussion will focus on the critical function of a free press in promoting transparency, holding institutions accountable, and mitigating conflict through responsible and ethical journalism.
The foundation stressed that growing threats to press freedom across the globe have made it imperative to strengthen media independence as a cornerstone of peace building and democratic resilience.
Participants will engage on key issues including media ethics, journalist safety, the spread of misinformation, and the role of the press in conflict-sensitive reporting.
The event is open to journalists, civil society organisations, media practitioners and the general public.
Interested participants are encouraged to join via the foundation’s official X Space channel or follow its social media platforms for access details.
