UGHELLI/Nigeria: An indigene of Ohorho in Uwheru kingdom, Mr Johnson Idisi, has urged the Delta State government and the Legislative arm of government to, as a matter of necessity and for the protection of lives and properties pass antigrazing law in the state.
Mr Idisi who spoke with our correspondent recently, following the alleged killing of farmers in Uwheru kingdom by suspected herdsmen, in his office said the anti-grazing law would be the right solution to the crisis between the herdsmen and the local farmers in the state. “So what I think the government of Delta State should do to put an end to this herdsmen killing, is to pass the anti-grazing law.” “This law, if fully enforced, and backed up by the people, will help to solve the problems of herdsmen killing,” he said.
Mr Idisi, who is also the accountant to the Ughelli North Primary Health Care Development Authority, said, in Benue and Ekiti states where the anti-grazing law operate, the herdsmen and farmers crisis have been reduced to a minimal level
He narrated that the herdsmen and farmers crisis in Uwheru kingdom have been an annual occurrence, saying that lives and properties are always lost each time it occurs. He said that the situation is beyond the control of the poor farmers and urged the state government to be proactive to check the reoccurrence of the killing and destruction of crops in the kingdom.
Mr Idisi expressed fears of food scarcity that may hit the kingdom and its environs since crops such as maize, cassava and potatoes have been destroyed by the herdsmen. He also urged government to provide adequate security for the people to enable them settle down.
He condemned the aggressive nature of the Fulani herdsmen and their killing drive which he described as inimical to peaceful coexistence. Mr Idisi tasked the security agencies in the state to arrest those evil herdsmen involved in the killing of farmers in Uwheru kingdom.
