ABUJA/Nigeria: Hon. Bashiru Dawodu, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Disability, has reiterated the committee’s dedication to upholding the rights outlined in the Persons with Disability Act. Dawodu emphasized the need for rigorous enforcement, acknowledging existing gaps that amendments alone might not adequately address.
“The commitment of the committee is unwavering in ensuring the enforcement of the Persons with Disability Act,” stated Dawodu, underscoring ongoing efforts aimed at re-enacting the Act due to significant deficiencies within its current framework.
During the media parley, Dawodu highlighted the committee’s active engagement with the challenges faced by Persons with Disabilities (PWD). He stressed the importance of gathering input from stakeholders, emphasizing that these inputs will play a pivotal role in shaping the amendments discussed during public hearings.
Moreover, Dawodu emphasized the necessity of amending the Child’s Right Act to encompass the concerns raised by the PWD community, acknowledging the imperative of their inclusion within broader legislative frameworks.
“While amendments are crucial, our focus remains steadfast on advocating for legislation that not only addresses the gaps but also promotes and protects the rights of persons with disabilities nationwide,” Dawodu reaffirmed, emphasizing the committee’s overarching commitment to championing the rights of the PWD community.
