BENIN-CITY/Nigeria: In a distressing turn of events, the Edo State Police Command has apprehended the spouse of the late Mrs. Toluige Olokoobi Babalola, widely recognized as ‘Mummy Calm Down,’ amidst suspicions surrounding her reported suicide in Benin City.
Mrs. Babalola gained notoriety in 2020 when a video went viral depicting her son pleading with her, uttering the now-famous words, “Mummy calm down, mummy calm down,” after apparently transgressing. The recent incident has cast a somber shadow over the family, raising questions about the circumstances leading to her tragic demise.
According to the Edo State Police Command’s spokesperson, Chidi Nwabuzor, the arrested husband, identified as a driver and car dealer, informed the police that upon returning home, he discovered his wife hanging by a rope around her neck. Nwabuzor confirmed the detention of the deceased’s husband, shedding light on the ongoing investigation into the perplexing incident.
The husband asserted that he promptly sought assistance from neighbors upon making the grim discovery. Together, they rushed Mrs. Babalola to the hospital, where her untimely death was confirmed, and her remains were subsequently deposited in a mortuary.
While the neighbors, who preferred to remain anonymous, expressed shock over the tragedy, they maintained that the couple seemed content and did not exhibit any visible signs of marital discord or the woman undergoing difficult times. The deceased, residing at No. 89, Garrick Layout, Benin City, was a pharmaceutical company distributor, while her husband had transitioned from a banking career at a new-generation bank to pursue a profession as a car dealer.
Edo State Police Command’s spokesperson, Nwabuzor, disclosed that the husband faced scrutiny from the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) for failing to report the incident to the police before taking his wife to the hospital and mortuary. This lapse, Nwabuzor emphasized, contravenes the established constitutional protocol, which empowers the police to conduct investigations into such matters.
“The man is still with the police and would soon be transferred to the command homicide section of the state CID for further investigation,” asserted Nwabuzor, underscoring the gravity of the situation as authorities delve deeper into unraveling the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of ‘Mummy Calm Down.’
