ASABA/Nigeria: The Independent National Electoral Commission has assured its members of staff and ad hoc personnel of prompt welfare settlement in case of an eventuality in the line of duty.
The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner for Delta State, Mr. Monday Udoh Tom, made the pledge in Asaba, the State capital, at a Two Day Sensitization Workshop for Welfare Desk Officers of the commission.
INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner for Delta State Monday Udoh-Tom, said the training was aimed at equipping officers on how to handle the welfare needs of staff and ad hoc personnel.
“Both the permanent staff and ad hoc staff, we must make sure that we cover them with insurance against indemnity. Because of that, we have to plan for tomorrow.” He said.
Mr. Udoh-Tom however condemned the killings during the recent by-election in Ekiti State, and appealed to stakeholders in Delta State, not to allow a repeat of the incident in the forthcoming by-election in Isoko North, on the 10th of April.
“Please, go and vote for whoever you want. Don’t carry weapons.”
Meanwhile, INEC Director of Administration Mr. Ayodele Aluko, explained the exercise would be conducted in phases in observance of the COVID-19 protocols, saying the workshop for INEC Welfare Desk Officers in the 19 Northern states will hold in Kano next week.
“We can’t have too many people in a place at the same time. We will hold the workshop for them, then we’ll go to Kano next week.”
Some of the participating Welfare Desk Officers also made observations on the sensitization workshop, saying it was a very impressive
“We are expecting that the challenges we have faced so far is going to be resolved.”
“Our expectation is that after this workshop we’ll be able to improve the communication channel.”
The participants were enlightened on the policy thrust of the commission, documentation for processing condolence visits and addressing cases of unpaid benefits to employees and ad hoc staff.
