Investing in Women: A Strategic Imperative for Accelerated Progress – Nwafor

LAGOS/Nigeria: Mrs ChinweUgo Nwafor, Head, Internal Audit and Control, Transcorp Group, emphasized that investing in women is a strategic imperative that will create significant returns to society as a whole. She made this statement at the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos Sector Command 4th Edition of Women in Uniform, in commemoration of the 2024 UN International Women’s Day celebration, on Friday in Lagos. The event was themed ‘Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress.’

Nwafor urged the women in uniform to ensure they had an identity and be educated, which she described as a potent tool for their empowerment. She highlighted measures to ensure that investment in women yields accelerated progress, including entrepreneurship to foster innovation, mentorship, transparent promotion and evaluation to ensure women are rewarded based on merit and not gender, and incorporating women’s perspective into artificial intelligence.

She stressed that collective action was needed for women to catalyze progress for gender equality. Dr Tope Mark-Odigie, Chief Executive Officer, Reb360/TV host, emphasized the rewards in investing in women and encouraged the women in uniform to be confident in striving for their goals.

Mrs Rachel Akhuetie, Executive Director at SunTrust Oil Company Nigeria Ltd., called for more attention to be given to women in uniform who offer services to the nation. She urged the women to always upgrade themselves and not turn down opportunities to speak publicly to build their confidence in their field.

FRSC Lagos Sector Commander, Babatunde Farinloye, highlighted the achievements and contributions of inspirational women in uniform who sacrifice their comforts, families, and ultimately risk their lives in the line of duty to ensure the security and safety of citizens. He noted the evolving role of women in Nigeria, breaking stereotypes and achieving in various fields of endeavors.

Participants at the celebration included women in uniform from the Army, Navy, Immigration, Nigeria Customs Service, Special Marshals of FRSC, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Airforce, and others.
