OZORO/Nigeria: The Chairman of Isoko North Local Government Area, Godwin Ogorugba, has issued a stern warning to road traffic offenders, declaring that violators will be apprehended and penalized under the law.
Ogorugba gave the warning on Monday while inaugurating the Road Task Force Committee in his office. He condemned the reckless behavior of commercial motorcycle (Okada) riders and motorists who routinely flout traffic regulations, particularly those driving against traffic.
“We have lost too many lives due to this reckless one-way driving. It pains me deeply, especially as we recently buried one of my cousins who died as a result of this. The committee’s mandate is to support existing government agencies in ensuring road safety, not to extort money from residents,” Ogorugba stated.
He also raised concerns over illegal trading activities along major roads in the Iyede axis, stressing that traders encroaching on the roadway pose serious risks to lives and property. “If anything happens there, it will be a tragedy we won’t easily recover from. We must address this issue now before it escalates beyond control,” he warned.
The newly inaugurated committee is chaired by Emmanuel Akukwata, who will oversee the Ozoro axis. Other members include Isagba Gabriel (Otor Owhe), Lucky Okeremu (Emevor), and Festus Onwah (Iyede), with representatives from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and traffic officers from Ozoro Division A and Otor Owhe Division B also participating.
FRSC Unit Commander Mukoro O. I., who was present at the event, commended the initiative, emphasizing that the rising number of accidents and casualties necessitated urgent action.
In his remarks, Akukwata expressed gratitude to the council chairman for the trust reposed in them, pledging that the task force would diligently carry out its duties in line with the chairman’s vision.
Dignitaries at the inauguration included the Vice Chairman, Evelyn Aluta, Secretary to the Council, Vote Umukoro, Supervisors, and Security Chiefs.
