JUSTICE FOR DELTANS: Delta Justice Ministry Collaborates With Legal Aid Council

ASABA/Nigeria: Isaiah Bozimo Esq, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Delta State has assured that the Ministry of Justice would collaborate with the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria in fighting perceived injustice in the state.

Bizimo stated this when he played host to members of the Legal Aid Council, Delta State Branch, in his office in Asaba, the state capital.

He commended the group for their doggedness in the battle for the right of the oppressed and indigents the state.

He assured the lawyers that the ministry would assist the group towards the actualisation of set goals, saying that he would collaborate with the council in boosting their manpower through the deployment of existing NYSC members to the council which, he believed, would improve on the experience of the corps member as they serve in the state.

Bozimo used the opportunity to explain the administration of Criminal Justice Laws, which the ministry had proposed for the month of January where their imputs would be of immense benefit to the state.

The Coordinator of the group, Mrs Imo, explained to the commissioner that as a body which had existed in the state for 20 years, they were saddled with the responsibilities of assisting indigent citizens of the state to access justice through free represention in courts.

Mrs Imo added that they also do periodic visits to custodians and correctional centres where they interviewed indigent inmates who could not afford private lawyers to represent themselves.

She revealed that they had mediation centres in their offices where they mediate between conflicting parties by restoring peace amicably, including with the police, Solicitor Scheme (PDSS) where they advised police on status of cases, among other laudable lifesaving programmes.

She appealed to the Attorney-General to take up their challenges to the Delta State Government for assistance, including shortage of manpower.
