BENIN-CITY/Nigeria: Peace Onyesom, a young lawyer abducted on her way back from her call-to-bar ceremony in Abuja, has regained freedom alongside her sister, Gift Onyesom, following a military rescue operation in Edo State.

The sisters were kidnapped last Friday along the Okene-Auchi road when gunmen intercepted their vehicle. Their abduction, which sparked national outrage, saw the captors initially demand a ransom of N10 million.

According to family sources, soldiers rescued the victims around the Okpella forest area. A brother to Peace, Godspower Onyesom, confirmed their release late Tuesday evening, telling journalists, “She has been released. She is back home.”

In a video message released after their rescue, Peace expressed gratitude to Nigerians and security agencies, saying, “Thank you, everyone. My sister and I have been rescued. The military in Okpella has rescued us.”

Human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu also confirmed their freedom, noting that the victims were released to him and others near a village in Okpella after what he described as “a tough journey.”

Peace and Gift Onyesom, who hail from Ukwuani Local Government in Delta State but live with their parents in Benin City, Edo State, have since reunited with their family.
