Lagos Gears Up for 2023 Mangrove Marathon Race – A Run to Restore and Conserve Coastal Ecosystems

LAGOS/Nigeria: All is set for the much-anticipated Lagos 2023 Mangrove Marathon Race, set to take place on July 29 along the scenic Ibeju-Lekki expressway corridor. The event, hosted by a consortium of environmental conservationists in collaboration with the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), marks the second edition of the 10km eco-awareness run dedicated to raising awareness and resources for mangrove restoration and conservation efforts across Nigeria’s coastline.

Following the resounding success of the debut edition in Warri, Delta State in 2022, the coalition has declared that this year’s marathon will be held along the Lekki Free Trade Zone expressway in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos. The race aims to commemorate the International Day for the Conservation of Mangroves, shining a spotlight on these vital coastal ecosystems often referred to as the “lungs” or “guardians” of our coasts due to their role in mitigating climate change by absorbing 15 times more carbon than regular forests.

Mangroves play a crucial role in providing habitats for diverse marine species and act as natural protectors for coastal communities, shielding them from the destructive forces of ocean surges. Additionally, these ecosystems serve as essential sources of food, shelter, energy, and medicine for millions of coastal dwellers living below the poverty line.

However, the very existence of these precious mangroves is threatened by human activities such as deforestation, urbanization, industrialization, and pollution. The Mangrove Marathon Race aims to make a significant impact in their restoration and conservation to secure a sustainable and greener future, preserving these natural carbon sinks and shoreline protection species to combat the impacts of climate change and slow coastal erosion from rising sea levels.

Excitement is building among participants of all ages and fitness levels as they prepare to embark on a thrilling journey through picturesque coastal routes, passing through lush mangrove ecosystems, witnessing the beauty and importance of these incredible natural wonders. For those unable to attend in person, there are options for virtual participation from any part of the world.

The organizers are actively seeking passionate runners and sponsors who share their commitment to environmental conservation. With a total prize money of N5,000,000 for the first 60 participants across male and female categories, the event aims to recognize and reward dedication to the cause.

For sponsors, the Mangrove Marathon presents an opportunity to showcase their dedication to sustainability and corporate social responsibility while gaining extensive exposure through various event marketing materials, social media campaigns, press coverage, and on-site visibility during the marathon.

Mr. Jerry Chidi, the Convener of the Race, highlights the significance of sponsor support, emphasizing how it directly contributes to mangrove reforestation initiatives, research programs, community education projects, and carbon credits acquisition from their blue carbon partners, ultimately reducing carbon footprints and leaving a positive impact on coastal ecosystems.

Dr. Joseph Onoja, Director-General of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), emphasizes the importance of creating awareness and consciousness for mangrove and forest restoration as crucial for environmental preservation. As a leading environmental NGO in Nigeria, NCF is excited to participate in and support this initiative, committing to ensuring the success of this year’s marathon.

Prince David Omaghomi, Secretary of the Local Organizing Committee and Founder of Eco-Restoration Foundation, believes the Mangrove Marathon to be a powerful tool to engage the community and raise awareness about the significance of mangrove conservation.

Ms. Doyin Ogunye, Founder of Reswaye – the Recycling partners for the Mangrove Marathon, underscores the power of collaboration with sponsors who share their vision, emphasizing how uniting together can protect these invaluable habitats and promote a sustainable future.

Support and enthusiasm for the Mangrove Marathon extend beyond the organizing consortium, as representatives of Falcorp Mangrove Sanctuary, Warri, Delta State, the host State & Local Government, Barrister Afeez Otunoye, and members of the Athletic Federation of Nigeria all pledge their commitment to the event’s success as partners of the coalition.
