Lagos State Government Cracks Down on Street Trading and Hawking

LAGOS/Nigeria:  In a decisive move to restore order to its bustling streets, the Lagos State Government has imposed a comprehensive ban on street trading, hawking, the construction of illegal structures along drainage setbacks, and the display of goods on walkways across the state. This announcement came on Friday, delivered by Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, in an official statement.

The new measures are aimed at curbing the rampant activities of street hawkers, some of whom engage in criminal acts, including robbing motorists and causing disruptions to traffic flow on highways and streets. Commissioner Wahab emphasized the necessity of these actions to ensure the safety and convenience of residents and commuters.

To enforce the ban and ensure strict compliance with environmental sanitation laws, the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) has been given a clear mandate. Their role will be pivotal in upholding the ban and preventing the resurgence of street trading and hawking within the state.

In a parallel move to assert the government’s commitment to enforcing environmental regulations, Commissioner Wahab personally supervised the sealing of Ladipo market in the Mushin area during the early hours of Friday. This drastic action followed numerous environmental offenses committed by market traders, including reckless waste disposal, unhygienic premises, and non-payment of waste bills, among others.

The decision to crack down on street trading and hawking reflects the Lagos State Government’s determination to maintain a clean and orderly environment for its residents. With the full backing of LAGESC, these measures are poised to bring about a significant transformation in the streets of Lagos, ensuring safer, more hygienic, and convenient conditions for all.
