Lagos State Government Escalates Drainage Cleaning Efforts to Safeguard Against Flooding

LAGOS/Nigeria: In a determined bid to uphold its commitment to ensuring a flood-free Lagos, the Lagos State Government has intensified its dredging and cleaning operations across major drainage channels and canals throughout the state.

The affirmation came from the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, who, on Sunday, led state officials on a comprehensive inspection tour to various areas. During the inspection, Wahab highlighted the ongoing efforts, emphasizing the crucial role of these initiatives in mitigating flood risks, particularly as the rainy season approaches.

Wahab underscored the significance of redesigning and reconstructing the system 44 drainage channel, particularly in the Lekki axis, following the removal of structures encroaching upon the setback. This strategic move is aimed at averting flooding incidents in vulnerable areas once rainfall commences.

Speaking to journalists following the tour, Wahab elaborated on the scope of the project, noting that the system 44 drainage, spanning approximately five kilometers, traverses key locations including Lekki Scheme II, Gedegede Community, Ikota GRA, Cluster 1/Ivy Homes, and Megamond Estates. He emphasized that the dredging and lining of the canal are pivotal steps towards alleviating seasonal challenges faced by residents in these areas, thereby safeguarding lives and properties.

Furthermore, Wahab urged residents to take collective responsibility for safeguarding public infrastructure within their communities, urging them to refrain from dumping refuse into canals and drains and to respect the designated right-of-way for drainage systems.

In a collaborative effort to ensure timely project completion, the contractor tasked with the concrete lining work was introduced to local chiefs and Baales in the Lekki 2 area, soliciting their cooperation.

Accompanying Wahab on the inspection were key officials including the Special Adviser on Environment, Mr. Kunle Rotimi-Akodu, and representatives from various government agencies involved in environmental management and infrastructure development.

Prior to the Lekki tour, the team conducted inspections in Apapa, focusing on enforcement actions to reinstate drainage setbacks and issuing abatement notices to properties infringing upon approved meters setback.

Wahab reiterated the government’s commitment to ongoing cleanup and resilience-building efforts, affirming that similar activities will be conducted continually across the state, employing both manual and mechanical methods.

Additionally, Wahab directed immediate cleaning of the Ilabere Drainage Channel in Ikoyi and issued abatement notices to contractors found obstructing traffic flow with unauthorized construction materials.

Expressing satisfaction with recent demolition exercises in Mayegun and Jakande areas of Lekki, Wahab emphasized that such actions are undertaken in the public interest. He highlighted the apprehension of individuals found possessing arms during enforcement activities, reaffirming the government’s resolve to uphold law and order.

In a stern warning, Wahab admonished those encroaching upon drainage setbacks and alignments to dismantle their structures promptly, cautioning that legal action would be taken against violators. He urged pedestrians to prioritize safety by utilizing designated pedestrian bridges and vowed stringent enforcement against violators endangering their lives by crossing highways.

Echoing Wahab’s sentiments, the Special Adviser on Environment, Mr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, emphasized the government’s zero-tolerance stance towards environmental abuse, stressing the imperative for residents to refrain from obstructing drainage systems and dumping refuse in them.

Rotimi-Akodu reiterated that the overarching objective of the ongoing dredging and cleaning operations is to facilitate unimpeded flow of rainstorm water during the upcoming rainy season, underscoring the collective responsibility of all Lagosians in preserving the environment and ensuring a resilient urban landscape.
