EFFURUN/Nigeria: With one week to the closing date of the ongoing Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) voters’ registration exercise on Friday August 17th, 2019 leaders of Arewa, Yoruba and Igbos in Uvwie Local Government Area have charged their indigenes in the area who have not registered for the exercise to do so before the closing date.
The Arewa, Asiwaju and President of Ohaneaze Ndigbo in Uvwie Local Government Area gave the charge in separate interactions with our correspondents in Effurun.
The Seriki (leader) of Arewa Community in area, Alhaji Suleiman Jauro, said “We made it mandatory for every Arewa indigene of voting age to have his or her PVCs, for they will be asked to produce it during our monthly meetings. So let me use this medium to call on those of us who have not registered to do so before the closing date of the exercise.”
On his part, the Asiwaju (leader) of Yorubas in the LGA, Salami Olaniyi spoke in the same vein as he said that he had preached the gospel of having PVCs to the Yorubas in Uvwie in mosques, churches, social gatherings and at their monthly meetings.
According to him, “It is the civic responsibility of every Nigerian of voting age to vote. And you cannot vote without your PVC. So all Yorubas in Uvwie of voting age who have not registered for the exercise should do so before the closing date of the exercise”
The President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Delta Central And South Senatorial District, Honourable Mike Eze who was represented by Nze Francis Onuora a Special Assistant (SA) to Governor Okowa on Non indigene Affairs called on Igbos in the area to have their PVCs ready for the exercise.
“The Igbos and indeed other non indigenes in Uvwie Local Government Area should have their PVCs ready for the 2019 general elections. This is the only way they can vote for leaders of their choice”, he stated.
The President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo noted that most people of voting age were willing to register for the exercise but had the constraint of timing and other bottle necks confronting them in the exercise.
While noting that the exercise had been good so far he said that there should be room for improvement in order to accommodate those who were jostling to register for the exercise.
Meanwhile there was still an upsurge of people trooping to INEC office at Uvwie Local Government Council Secretariat in Effurun to register for the exercise at as the time of filing this report.
