Leaders Tasked on Creating of Development Opportunities for Subordinates

EFFURUN/Nigeria: Leaders had been called to cultivate the habit of creating opportunity for those under them to strive, so as to enable them focus on more strategic task that can be successfully executed.
This was stated by Mr. Sylvester Okoh, Field Projects Manager, Foundation For Partnership Initiative In The Niger Delta (PIND) while lecturing students of centre LSD Leader School in partnership with Value Rebirth and  Empowerment Initiative on “Leadership and Management/Development” at Heartland Hotel, Effurun, Delta State.
He said the business of a true leader is to design strategies, by engaging in more sensitive and significant task and delegating other minimal task to those under them, so as to get everyone involved in executing their strategy, adding that leaders should maintain courage in people by making them to understand why they need to be part of the work, as well as the content of the work plan.
Mr. Okoh who defined management as the process of working with people and resources to accomplish organisational goals, stated that planning, Organising, Leading and Controlling are the main functions of management, even as he maintained that management level is either, top level, middle level and frontline managers.
Speaking on “Leadership and Development”, he said Leadership is not about funding election, but creating development, stressing that development will lead to good change manifested in increased capacity of people to have control over material assets, intellectual resources and ideology; obtain physical necessities of life, such as food, clothing and shelter as well as sustainable development and Peace.

He further mentioned that poor leadership, bad followership, colonial heritage, poor strategy, corruption etc, are the challenges of development in Nigeria, and maintained that in order to overcome the challenges, dynamic and visionary leadership, good policy ideas, transparent and accountable governance, capacity building, reform of the public service and movement for the transformational change must be in place.
