WARRI/Nigeria: There were mixed reactions by some lawyers in Warri South and Uvwie local government areas who spoke with our correspondent on the on-going nation-wide strike of Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN)
Renowned human right activist and constitutional lawyer, Mr Oghenejabor Ikimi, argued that the court judgement which the striking judicial workers were relying upon was unenforceable, because according to him, there was a lacuna in Section 81, Sub-Section 3 of the Nigerian Constitution.
While stating that government might be capitalizing on the said lacuna, he advised the striking judicial workers to take their case to the national assembly where the lacuna could be properly addressed.
Ikimi further cautioned that if after 25 years, noting was done to address the lacuna in the said judgement, it would become a bad case for the judicial workers.
However, a legal icon, Mr Victor Sodje, who declared his support for the judicial workers strike, noted that until they embarked on a strike action government would not take them seriously, insisted that the workers were fighting for their rights.
Another legal practitioner, Mr Ufuoma Mariere while declaring his support for the strike action, urged both government and judicial workers to resolved the crisis amicably and quickly in the interest of quick delivery of justice, particularly as it affects the common man.
On his part, Chief Raphael Okene, also a legal practitioner, declared his support for the striking, as he called on government to keep to it side of the bargain.
