ASABA/Nigeria: As one of the projects to be carried out by the Lions club in the Lions year 2018/2019, Region 10 of district 404A1 Nigeria visited the IDP Camp at Ogbe Afor Primary School Asaba September 28, 2018, where those affected by flooding of their communities are taking refuge.
The District Governor, Lion Sir Monday Onyeme in the company of his wife, Lion lady Ezinne Catherine Onyeme, Lion Ogbueshi Okey Ofili, the region chair, Lion Emmanuel Chukwurah, among other lions in the region performed the humanitarian right of the club by bringing items that will be needed by the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP’s).
The district governor who also is the executive chairman of the Delta State Board Of Internal Revenue thanked his fellow lions to have thought it wise to come out in mass to visit the displaced persons, for been their brother’s keeper and doing what they do best which is caring for the needy.
Onyeme speaking said “I sympathize with everyone of you. What we do as a club is to assist people who are in need, people who are less privileged. We are not only here just to say sorry but we have brought you some items that will be of importance to you while you are here in this camp”.
The District Governor stated that as a club they cannot meet all the needs of the affected peoples alone, neither can the government. He beckoned on every other humanitarian service groups to come assist and meet the needs of the IDP, financially, medically and in whatever capacity as this will reduce their sufferings.
The district governor encouraged the IDPs to make do with the items brought, that more will be brought if available after they must have visited every other IDP camps outsides Asaba as the district encompasses five (5) different states. The items brought include food items, buckets, slippers, and other items and were all handed over to the camp commandant to distribute to the internally displaced persons
The District Governor stated that they started with Delta State, as it’s the present home of the District Governor.
“We choose to start here as this is our home town we pray the flood goes away quickly and a durable solution is profiled immediately to avoid reoccurrence so everyone goes back to their homes as there is no place like home.”
The camp commandant Okpor Daniel on behalf of the IDPs thanked the club for their kind gestured as many of them came into the camp naked as the flood came unawares. He prayed god’s blessing on every member of the club.
