BOJI-BOJI OWA/Nigeria: In a shocking incident fueled by growing frustration over rampant motorcycle theft, a mob in Boji-Boji Owa, located in the Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta, took matters into their own hands and lynched two young men.
The victims, believed to be in their thirties, were accused of attempting to steal a motorcycle parked outside a popular eatery along the Old Lagos Asaba Road.
Eyewitnesses at the scene revealed that the suspects, who hailed from one of the Eastern states, had traveled to Boji-Boji Owa with criminal intentions.
However, their plans were abruptly cut short when they were caught red-handed by vigilant locals. Despite efforts by journalists to interview the accused, the furious crowd prevented any communication, resorting to physical aggression.
Mr. Obodo, a resident of the locality, expressed his deep concern regarding the recurring incidents of motorcycle theft in the area. Recounting his personal experiences, he lamented, “I have been a victim twice. What baffles me the most is that these miscreants kill or inflict various degrees of injuries on their victims.
They go about looking for new bikes to steal. I don’t know the chemical they use in breaking locks or how they can leave a bike out of a tall fence without stress.”
“I am not happy with what happened to these fellows, but the issue is that when they are arrested by security operatives, they usually find their ways out in society and continue to commit havoc.”
The lynching incident serves as a grim reminder of the growing frustration among residents regarding the escalating cases of motorcycle theft.
It highlights a lack of confidence in the effectiveness of law enforcement and the criminal justice system, prompting some members of the community to take justice into their own hands. The tragic event also raises questions about the need for improved security measures and more robust efforts to combat motorcycle theft in the region.
