ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State Commissioner for Transport, Sir Vincent Amejuma Uduaghan, has called on motorists and other road users to be mindful of their actions as it concerns the issues of free flow of traffic in the State.
Sir Uduaghan made the call in an interview he granted concerning a 3-day combined exercise of Transport and Environment Ministries at riding the state capital, Asaba of shanties used for business activities in various road junctions as well as commercial vehicles operating in illegal parks within the metropolis.
The combined taskforces combed every major junction and roads converted to illegal motor parks or used as business grounds such as road shoulders, walkways and sometimes bus stops.
The Director of Land Transport, Mr Victor Omoniyi led the taskforce and personnel from the Ministry of Transport, during the exercise.
Areas where formal notice was issued were visited and obstinate and recalcitrant individuals with abandoned and broken down vehicles towed away, and in some cases wares displayed on walkways were confiscated.
There were pockets of resistance from some business owners and other road users that were accosted by the taskforces, for various traffic and environmental offences.
Comrade Kingsley Iweka, charged residents of the state capital to keep their drains clean and tidy their environment in order to enjoy good health as well as keep the aesthetic beauty of the city.
While Mr Omoniyi enjoined motorists and other road users to shun parking at road junctions as well as to avoid creating illegal parks thereby causing impediment to the free flow of traffic, stressing that all such acts of violation of traffic rules and regulations would be resisted.
Sir Uduaghan appealed to motorists and other road users to cooperate with the personnel from the Ministries of Transport and Environment, adding, “No amount of intimidation will discourage them from carrying out the duties of making sure that our roads and environment are free from all traffic encumbrances and filth.”
The areas visited by the combined team included D.D.P.A Housing Estate, Summit Road, Inter Bau Roundabout, Nnebisi Road, Koka Junction, Ibusa Junction and Ibusa Road, among other areas.
Similar exercise of clearing all traffic obstructions will soon be carried out in Warri, Effurun and environs.
