LAGOS/Nigeria: The Nigerian Association of Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Practitioners (NARAP) has launched an annual celebration, NARAP Day, dedicated to honouring the vital role played by refrigeration and air conditioning (RAC) professionals in Nigeria.

Speaking during the inaugural edition held Thursday in Lagos, the National President of NARAP, Ahmed Ibrahim, announced that July 31 would henceforth be observed yearly as NARAP Day. The date also coincides with the anniversary of the association’s national elections, which he described as a turning point for leadership and innovation in the industry.

“This is the first of what will become an annual celebration to honour the men and women who literally keep our systems cool,” Ibrahim said. “It aligns with the global World Refrigeration Day and adopts its theme, Cold Things, to emphasize the critical role of cooling technology in food preservation, health care, and environmental safety.”

He reaffirmed NARAP’s partnership with the federal government in promoting energy-efficient air conditioners and phasing out ozone-depleting substances in compliance with international environmental agreements.

Coordinator of the Lagos State chapter, Mr. Alex Okelola, highlighted the association’s progress in enforcing minimum energy efficiency standards and the responsible use of refrigerants like R22. He expressed appreciation to private sector partners and called for more government support in making safer tools and materials available to practitioners.

“We appreciate the support from companies and commend the Lagos State Government and the UNDP for building the capacity of our members through provision of gas recovery machines,” Okelola stated.

Deputy National Secretary of NARAP, Adelodun Adesola, described the event as a historic milestone for the association. He noted several reforms under the current leadership, including the introduction of digital identity cards and a centralized database to curb quackery and enhance professionalism.

Environmental expert and Executive Director of Sustainable Research and Action for Environmental Development (SRADev) Nigeria, Dr. Leslie Adogame, stressed that NARAP’s role is essential to Nigeria’s adherence to the Montreal Protocol and the transition to eco-friendly cooling technologies.

“NARAP is a vital partner in achieving Nigeria’s net-zero targets. Through their grassroots network, we are building the capacity of technicians and promoting responsible handling of climate-sensitive equipment,” Adogame said.

Also speaking, Mr. Yunusa from the Nigeria Ozone Office emphasized the importance of sustainable practices in the installation and servicing of RAC systems. He said adherence to global standards will determine the sector’s contribution to long-term climate resilience.

With the successful debut of NARAP Day, the association’s growing influence, strategic partnerships, and advocacy are poised to redefine Nigeria’s refrigeration and air-conditioning industry in line with global sustainability goals.
