ASABA/Nigeria: Rt Hon Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, the National Treasurer of the Conference of Speakers of States Houses of Assembly, has expressed optimism that the ongoing industrial action by the Parliamentary Staff Associations of Nigeria (PASAN) will soon come to an end as critical stakeholders are working tirelessly to resolve the issues at hand.
Rt Hon Guwor, who also serves as the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, shed light on the current state of affairs and the efforts being made to find an amicable and lasting solution to the impasse in a recent telephone interview.
“The leadership of the States Houses of Assembly is not happy over the ongoing industrial action by the parliamentary workers. You can observe that all through last week, we could not sit because of the strike. We are not happy that we cannot carry out our legislative functions,” said Guwor, underscoring the impact of the strike on the legislative process.
However, he emphasized that the leadership of the Conference of Speakers of States Legislature is actively engaged in seeking a resolution to the problem. “We have been meeting for the past three days on the issue. I know the Governor’s Forum is also on it.”
The primary focus for Guwor and other stakeholders is finding a lasting solution to the impasse. “What matters most is a lasting solution to the impasse. We believe that the leadership of PASAN may also not want to unnecessarily prolong the strike. So it is our hope that the strike will be called off soon,” he stated.
The strike by the Parliamentary Staff Associations of Nigeria has had a significant impact on the functioning of the 36 States Houses of Assembly, as they have been unable to convene plenary sessions. This situation has prompted the involvement of critical stakeholders, who are actively working to mediate and facilitate a resolution to the ongoing dispute.
Guwor’s optimism reflects the commitment of those involved in these negotiations to ensure that the interests of all parties are addressed and that the strike is brought to a swift conclusion, allowing legislative activities to resume throughout the country.
