ASABA/Nigeria: In a staunch display of commitment to enhancing citizens’ welfare, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has issued a fervent call to governments across the South South region, emphasising the urgent need for a steadfast focus on delivering high-quality healthcare services to the populace.

In a joint statement, Zonal Vice Chairperson, Comrade Stella Macaulay and Zonal Secretary, Comrade Eunice Emeyazia underscored the profound challenges plaguing the region. They lamented the pervasive conflicts, coupled with escalating health threats stemming from malnutrition, psychological strain, and inadequate healthcare infrastructure and policies.

Highlighting the environmental degradation exacerbating health woes, the leaders condemned activities such as the combustion of fossil fuels, which contribute to air and water pollution. They pointed out the detrimental impact on public health, including heightened rates of illness and mortality.

The directive from South South leaders is clear: governments must step up to their responsibility of furnishing essential health services. Moreover, they urge for these services to be made both affordable and accessible to all citizens.

They stress the imperative for a critical examination of past actions and policies concerning citizens’ health rights. Furthermore, they implore authorities to actively seek avenues for enhancement, recognizing that a nation’s prosperity is intricately linked to the well-being of its populace.

World Health Day, observed annually on April 7th, serves as a poignant reminder of global health challenges and underscores the paramount importance of promoting overall well-being.
