Lagos: Two Brazilians, Lima Diego and Dias Cristina, has been arraigned before a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, for allegedly importing 23.895 kilogrammes of cocaine to Nigeria.
The duo, according to the prosecutor, Mr. Abu Ibrahim, were arrested at the arrival hall of Murtala Muhammad International Airport, Lagos, on April 18, during an inward clearance of passengers of an Emirates Airlines flight from Brazil.
NDLEA alleged that the two Brazilians conspired with others now at large to bring in the said banned drug to the country.
The first defendant, Diego, was alleged to have imported 14.495 kilogrammes of cocaine, while the second, Cristina was said to have imported 9.4 kilogrammes.
They pleaded not guilty to the charge of conspiracy, which was interpreted by one Mr. O. Adeniran, provided by the defendants’ embassy.
But the first defendant pleaded guilty to charge of importing the drug, while the second defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.
After a disagreement over the interpreter, Justice Mojisola Olatoregun held that the defendants should produce an interpreter of their choice at the next adjourned date, adding that the interpreter provided by the defendants’ embassy must also be present when the charge is reread to the defen-dants and their plea retaken.
