Ndokwa Indigenes Plead for Urgent Intervention Amid Herdsmen Attacks and Boundary Disputes With Edo State

KWALE/Nigeria: The people of Ndokwa have issued a passionate plea to the Federal Government of Nigeria, and the Delta State Government led by Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori  for immediate intervention to address the escalating crises caused by herdsmen attacks and boundary disputes with neighboring Edo State.

In a virtual meeting organized by Concerned Citizens of Ndokwa, the pressing issues surrounding farming activities and land ownership were brought to the forefront, emphasizing the urgent need for resolution to ensure peace and security in the area.

Of paramount concern is the ongoing contention between Ukwuani Local Government Area and Edo State, exacerbated by the involvement of agribusiness giant Presco, which claims ownership of the disputed lands backed by a Certificate of Occupancy. This situation has led to escalating tensions, with locals hesitant to utilize the contested lands due to the looming threat of herdsmen incursions.

Participants at the meeting emphasized the necessity of engaging the National Boundary Commission to expedite the demarcation process, highlighting that a swift resolution is vital for safeguarding lives and fostering peace in the affected communities, following the disclosure that locals may be involved in clandestine land transactions facilitating herdsmen encroachments and promoting the activities of Presco Limited.

Speaking at the event, former Ukwuani Local Government Chairman, Barrister Possible Ajede, provided a comprehensive overview of the situation, detailing past efforts and interactions with relevant authorities, in their efforts to mitigate the crisis, including engagement with Edo counterparts and bolstering local vigilante efforts.

To further seek a final solution to the various security challenges in the area, a delegation of four persons was constituted to visit the Deputy Governor of Delta State, Sir Monday Onyeme, who also serves as the state chairman of the boundary adjustment commission, with the mandate to advocate for urgent intervention and apprise him of the gravity of the situation.

The situation in Ndokwa underscores the urgent need for proactive measures to address the complex issues of herdsmen attacks, boundary disputes, and land ownership. Immediate intervention by relevant authorities is crucial to prevent further escalation of tensions and ensure the safety and well-being of the communities in the area.
