KWALE/Nigeria: The President-General of the Ndokwa Neku Union (NNU), Comrade Amechi Asugwuni, has urged female students across Ndokwa nation to cultivate good character and pursue quality education in order to become responsible mothers and productive citizens in society.
Asugwuni made the call at the weekend in Kwale during the maiden Ndokwa Girls Quiz Competition and Reading Culture Revival organised by the Ndokwa Neku Union Women Wing in collaboration with the You Matter Charity Foundation.
Addressing participants at the event, the NNU President-General emphasised the importance of good character among young girls, describing it as a vital virtue that brings honour and dignity to womanhood. He also noted that education remains a powerful tool for building confidence, strength and personal value in the lives of young women.
He commended the participating students for their enthusiasm and intellectual engagement, while encouraging parents and guardians to prioritise the education of the girl-child. According to him, women must look beyond traditional roles and position themselves as equal partners with men in the task of nation-building.
Asugwuni also called on women to actively participate in governance and societal development, stressing that integrity and a good name remain priceless assets for every woman. He further praised the Ndokwa Neku Union Women Wing for initiating the competition and urged them to sustain programmes that promote girl-child education and intellectual development.
In her keynote address, the Wife of the Delta State Governor, Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori, congratulated the organisers for promoting girl-child education and reading culture among young students. She encouraged the participants to think critically, read widely and compete intellectually, noting that education empowers not only the girl-child but also families and communities.
Represented at the event by the Wife of the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Mrs. Guwor, the governor’s wife highlighted her pet project, the You Matter Charity Foundation, which focuses on raising confident and educated young people across Delta State. She urged the girls to believe in their dreams and remain confident in their abilities.
The competition featured students from 15 secondary schools drawn from Ndokwa West, Ndokwa East and Ukwuani Local Government Areas. At the end of the quiz contest, Umutu Mixed Secondary School, Umutu emerged winner, followed by Ezionum Secondary School in second place, while Emu-Uno Mixed Secondary School and Abbi Girls Secondary School finished third.
In the reading culture category, Ashaka Mixed Secondary School, Ashaka came first, followed by Utagba-Ogbe Technical College in second position, while Novena University Staff School secured third place.
The event attracted several dignitaries including the Wife of the Deputy Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Mrs. Akpowowon; Director-General of the You Matter Charity Foundation, Barrister Mrs. Loretta Ogbedo; and Chief Johnson Opone, represented by his wife, Mrs. Opone, among others. Also present were Mrs. Obi Nzete, Mrs. Possible Ajede, Chief Mrs. Chinonye Dafe, Hon. Fidelis Tilije represented by Mr. Andy Atuma, Mrs. Mary Chidi, Hon. Mrs. Bridget Anyafulu, Prof. Mrs. Joyce Ogwezi, as well as royal mothers from Utagba-Ogbe and Umuebu communities.
