ABUJA/Nigeria: Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, on Tuesday met with Senator Ned Munir Nwoko, Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports Development and Chancellor of the Sports University of Nigeria, during a courtesy visit in Abuja that celebrated their recent continental triumph.
The meeting was filled with mutual admiration, as Senator Nwoko lauded the team’s extraordinary performance at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship, where they defeated Mali to clinch an unprecedented fifth consecutive title. D’Tigress, who arrived in Abuja on Monday, August 4, were upbeat and visibly proud to be received by one of the country’s most vocal champions of sports advancement.
“Your victory is a defining moment for Nigerian sports and a powerful symbol of what women can achieve when given the right platform and support,” Nwoko told the team, hailing their dominance on the African continent as “historic and inspiring.”

The Senator emphasized the far-reaching impact of their success, noting that it goes beyond basketball and into the broader development of women’s sports in Nigeria. He assured the players of his continued commitment to improving the sports ecosystem, particularly through legislative advocacy aimed at increased funding, infrastructure development, and policies that benefit athletes.
“As Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports Development, I will continue to push for reforms that ensure our athletes are equipped, motivated, and celebrated,” Nwoko said.
The D’Tigress squad, widely regarded as one of the most successful teams in Nigerian sports history, were clearly appreciative of the Senator’s support, describing the meeting as a morale booster and a sign that their efforts are recognised at the highest levels of government.
