ABUJA/Nigeria: In what could mark a major turning point for the nation’s sports media landscape, Senator Ned Nwoko has thrown his weight behind the National Sports Commission’s ambitious plan to fully revive sports broadcasting in Nigeria by year-end.

The initiative, spearheaded by NSC Chairman Mr. Shehu Dikko, was unveiled during a high-level inspection and engagement session with key players from Nigeria’s broadcasting and sports industries. Senator Nwoko described the effort as “a bold and commendable move” that could reshape how Nigerians experience sports.

At the heart of the revival strategy is Dikko’s “3Rs” agenda—Reform, Rebuild, Restore—a transformative blueprint designed to modernize Nigeria’s outdated sports broadcasting infrastructure. A major component of the plan includes a strategic partnership with Paris-based Thompson Broadcast, the original manufacturer of essential broadcast equipment, to ensure a comprehensive technical overhaul.

Top media establishments including the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), and Voice of America (VOA) participated in the inspection exercise, signaling strong institutional backing for the initiative.

“This initiative is more than infrastructure,” Senator Nwoko stated. “It’s about reigniting national pride, empowering our athletes, and ensuring that Nigerian sports are seen and heard across the globe.”

The project is expected to significantly boost visibility for local sports, while also unlocking new opportunities for youth engagement through sports, technology, and innovation.

Senator Nwoko reaffirmed his commitment to supporting progressive national programs. “As always, I stand fully in support of visionary efforts that elevate Nigeria and unlock new opportunities for our youth,” he said.

With a clear implementation roadmap and collaborative input from both domestic and international partners, the NSC’s push to reenergize Nigerian sports broadcasting is being hailed as a pivotal move, one that could restore Nigeria’s prominence in Africa’s sports media space.
