ASABA/Nigeria: Families displaced by recent floods in Delta North have begun receiving relief materials following the intervention of Senator Ned Nwoko, whose appeal to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) prompted swift federal action.

On Friday, September 12, officials of NEMA, in collaboration with the Delta State Emergency Management Agency, distributed food and household items to affected communities in Ndokwa East Local Government Area and adjoining districts. The intervention came after weeks of hardship triggered by torrential rains that submerged farmlands, destroyed homes, and disrupted livelihoods across the senatorial district.

Senator Nwoko, who had formally petitioned NEMA in July for urgent federal support, described the relief exercise as “a lifeline and a restoration of dignity” for displaced families. Represented at the event by Agape Fashanu, he said: “Representation is not about making promises; it is about taking action. This relief effort is proof that the arm of the Federal Government can and must reach our people when it matters most.”

The relief package comprised 300 bags of parboiled rice, 300 bags of garri, 300 cartons of spaghetti, 30 cartons each of vegetable oil, tomato paste, and seasoning cubes, along with 20 bags of iodized salt. Distribution was supervised by NEMA officials with logistical support from the Delta State Government to ensure fairness and transparency.

Beneficiaries, many of whom had lost their homes and sources of income, expressed gratitude for the intervention, describing it as a beacon of hope after weeks of despair.

Senator Nwoko commended NEMA’s Director-General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, for her prompt response and praised the Delta State Government for partnering in the exercise. He further pledged to leverage his position in the Senate to attract more interventions and development projects to Anioma land.

“This is only the beginning,” Nwoko assured. “Together, we will overcome disasters, rebuild livelihoods, and restore confidence in a brighter tomorrow.”
