Nigeria Conservation Foundation’s President Urges Better Management of Ecological Funds for Environmental Sustainability

LAGOS/Nigeria: In a notable call to action, Izoma Philip Asiodu, CFR, President of the Board of Trustees (BOT) of the Nigeria Conservation Foundation (NCF), emphasized the critical need for effective management of ecological funds in Nigeria. Asiodu’s remarks came during a media interview held on Wednesday in Lagos, marking his 90th birthday milestone.

Asiodu underscored the importance of directing ecological funds towards the Ministry of Environment and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) dedicated to environmental conservation. He asserted that such allocation would significantly bolster their efforts in safeguarding nature.

Furthermore, Asiodu urged the Federal Government to prioritize environmental sustainability in its decision-making processes and policies. He emphasized the necessity for the government to formulate initiatives that will positively impact future generations of Nigerians.

Highlighting the alarming decline in Nigeria’s forest cover, Asiodu called upon the government to fulfill its commitment to restore the country’s depleted forest cover to 25 per cent. He lamented the drastic reduction from Nigeria’s initial forest cover of over 35 per cent at independence to a mere three per cent presently, indicating substantial environmental degradation.

As part of the ongoing efforts to combat deforestation and promote afforestation, Asiodu referenced a campaign advocating tree planting, aligning with the recommendations of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

In line with his advocacy for widespread environmental sustainability, Asiodu urged the NCF to expand its impactful initiatives beyond the Lekki Conservation Center, urging replication throughout the country. He further implored the NCF to spearhead the establishment of environmental clubs in schools, fostering a culture of environmental stewardship among students.

Asiodu’s passionate plea extended to all Nigerians, encouraging them to cultivate the habit of tree planting as a vital measure to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change.

A distinguished figure in Nigeria’s administrative landscape, Asiodu, a former Super Permanent Secretary under General Gowon’s administration, has been instrumental in shaping the country’s bureaucratic framework post-independence. Celebrating his 90th birthday on February 26th, Asiodu’s legacy of environmental advocacy continues to inspire action towards a sustainable future for Nigeria.
