DUBAI/United Arab Emirates: Nigeria marked a pivotal moment in its pursuit of a net-zero carbon economy by 2060 with the launch of its Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategy (LT-LEDS) at COP28 in Dubai.
The unveiling, hosted at the esteemed African Pavilion in the Blue Zone, saw an assembly of global dignitaries and delegates, convened by Professor Chukwumerije Okereke, Director of the Center for Climate Change and Development at AEFUNAI, and Dr. Eugene Itua, Executive Director of Natural Eco-Capital.
The LT-LEDS, orchestrated under the guidance of the Department of Climate Change, Federal Ministry of the Environment, and concluded via the National Council on Climate Change, garnered praise from key figures. Ms. Halima-Bwa-Bari, representing Dr. Salisu Dahiru, Director General of the National Council on Climate Change, emphasized the strategy’s promise in fostering sustainable development and a climate-resilient economy.
Hon. Festus Keyamo (SAN), standing in for Hon. Balarabe Abbas Lawal, Minister for Environment, hailed the LTS as a significant milestone, aligning with Nigeria’s net-zero commitment from COP26. He urged international partners to bolster the implementation of the LT-LEDS, emphasizing the nation’s dedication to transitioning from fossil fuels to a low-carbon future in line with global initiatives like the Paris Agreement.
Praise for Nigeria’s achievement reverberated globally. Mr. Pablo Vieria, Global Director of the NDC Partnership, applauded Nigeria’s leadership, urging the adoption of LT-LEDS and pledging cooperation. Ms. Mathide Bord-Laurans from the French Development Agency (AFD) celebrated Nigeria’s launch, highlighting AFD’s support through the Nigeria Deep Decarbonization Project.
Mr. Richard Baron, Executive Director of the 2050 Pathways Platform, lauded Nigeria’s collaborative effort in crafting a national document of high quality, involving diverse stakeholders and led by Nigerian academics. However, amidst the celebration, emphasis was placed on practical implementation. Dr. Salisu Dahiru stressed the need for concerted efforts, urging the creation of an LT-LEDS Implementation Plan and the mobilization of capital from various sources.
Miss Chioma Amudi from the NCCC highlighted key requisites for translating the LT-LEDS into tangible investments, underscoring the importance of finance, stakeholder engagement, and robust institutions. Honorable Terseer Ugbor, Deputy Chairman House Committee of Environment of the Federal House of Representatives, pledged parliamentary support for the LT-LEDS implementation.
