ASABA/Nigeria: While the fate of 32 young men charged by the Ondo State police command over their alleged homosexuality, hangs in the balance at the court, the Delta State police in its fight to combat homosexual activities have recently arrested several gay men in the state.
It was revealed that, one of the suspects, upon interrogation, confessed how he has in years back indulged in same sex activities with one Ezekiel Mekwuye, believed to be a homosexual kingpin in his community among others.
The police is said to have through the suspect confession increased its manhunt for the homosexual kingpin, Ezekiel Mekwuye after years of disappearance.
It said that the Police got the information of the homosexual practices from some community youths who clamped down on the suspect for indulging in the act with another man.
Ezekiel Mekwuye, who is said to be the son of a Late pastor in Ika North East, Local Government Area of Delta State, and has been under police watch, escaped before the arrival of the police in the year 2006 after being caught having same sex activities with a man in a local guest house.
However, report from a reliable source, states that, he now lives in one of the African country with a different identity.
It was also reported that the Delta State command of the police force in charge of the issue has declared a wide search for the arrest and prosecution of the homosexual kingpin suspect.
It would be recall that, Nigeria has a legislation that outlaws homosexuality and imposes prison terms of up to 14 years for people convicted under the act prohibiting same sex marriage and activities.
The law in Nigeria makes it illegal for gay people to even hold a meeting or something of such. The Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act also criminalises homosexual clubs, associations and organizations, with penalties of up to 14 years in jail.
Beyond that, the Act provides that anybody found supporting/promoting acts of gay or lesbianism in clubs or elsewhere is punishable with 10 years imprisonment.
