LAGOS/Nigeria: The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has commended one of its staff members, Mr. Hayatu Garkuwa, for demonstrating integrity by returning a passenger’s wallet containing $700, naira notes, and ATM cards. The commendation came during a ceremony in Lagos, where Garkuwa was celebrated for his honesty.
The Acting Director of NRC, Mr. Ben Iloanusi, described Garkuwa’s action as a reflection of the corporation’s values of integrity and transparency. “Garkuwa found the wallet on Dec. 28, 2024, in the waiting room of the Abuja-Kaduna Train Station at Rigasa and immediately turned it over to his superiors. His action exemplifies the honesty and character we uphold at NRC,” Iloanusi stated.
As recognition, Garkuwa received an award for integrity, a certificate, a cash gift, and a token of appreciation. He was also named an anti-corruption ambassador by the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) of the NRC, while the Nigerian Union of Railway Workers (NUR) promised additional recognition for his exemplary conduct.
The ceremony also honoured NRC Deputy Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Yakub Mahmood, and 20 other staff members for their dedication during the recently concluded presidential free train ride initiative.
Highlighting the significance of the occasion, Iloanusi noted that the free train ride, conducted under the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and supervised by the Minister of Transportation, was a major success due to the commitment of NRC staff.
“We felt it was essential to recognise the key players who contributed to the success of the free train ride, which was a milestone for the NRC. Garkuwa’s transparency and dignity are shining examples for all our staff,” Iloanusi said.
Dr. Monsurat Omotayo, the NRC’s Director of Administration and Human Resources, also praised the dedication of all staff members, including directors, who worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the initiative. She emphasized that the recognition extended to staff members beyond the train ride initiative to encourage commitment and excellence within the corporation.
The NRC’s gesture serves as a reminder of the importance of integrity and dedication in public service.
