Nigeria’s Democratic Fabric at Risk: Okpe Union President Warns of Authoritarian Precipice

LAGOS/Nigeria: The President General of Okpe Union Worldwide, Prof Igho Natufe, delivered a sobering analysis of Nigeria’s democratic trajectory, asserting that the nation stands at the brink of authoritarianism. Reflecting on the significance of June 12, 1993, and the return to civilian rule 25 years ago, Prof Natufe emphasized that true democracy remains elusive in Nigeria.

In his discourse titled “The Problematic of Democracy and Governance in Nigeria,” Prof Natufe urged Nigerians to demand accountability, transparency, and good governance from their leaders, both political and traditional. He lamented the failure of elected representatives to safeguard the interests of their constituents, rendering the proclaimed “dividends of democracy” a hollow promise.

Moreover, he advocated for a national dialogue among indigenous nationalities to chart a new constitutional course for Nigeria. Prof Natufe emphasized the need to enshrine fundamental rights and freedoms for Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups, safeguarding their sovereignty and cultural heritage.

Expressing dismay at attempts to impose a unitary socio-cultural structure, Prof Natufe highlighted Nigeria’s multi-ethnic fabric, cautioning against policies that could stoke disunity.

Challenging the misconception that periodic elections equate to democracy, he underscored the prevalence of flawed electoral processes across Africa, including Nigeria. He condemned the annulment of the historic June 12 Presidential Election, which he described as a watershed moment marred by military interference.

Remembering the legacy of MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the June 12 election, Prof Natufe praised his contribution to Nigerian politics and called for continued commemoration of his sacrifice.

Examining the essence of democracy, Prof Natufe acknowledged diverse interpretations shaped by historical, cultural, and political contexts. He cautioned against narrow definitions that overlook the complexities of democratic governance.

Characterizing Nigerian politics as a battleground marred by violence, Prof Natufe lamented the pervasive influence of corruption and the weaponization of poverty. He stressed the urgent need for judicial reform to uphold the integrity of elections and ensure the independence of the judiciary.

Highlighting the importance of political culture, Prof Natufe advocated for the democratization of traditional institutions to align with modern republican principles. He outlined key pillars of good governance, emphasizing federalism, electoral integrity, and civic engagement.

Decrying the extravagance of political elites contrasted with widespread poverty, Prof Natufe called for fiscal responsibility and equitable distribution of resources. He criticized exorbitant allowances paid to lawmakers, denouncing it as a betrayal of public trust.

In conclusion, Prof Natufe urged Nigerians to remain vigilant in safeguarding democracy and called on leaders to prioritize the welfare of citizens above personal interests.
