ABUJA/Nigeria: The Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Umar Damagum, has declared that no zonal election was conducted in the South-South region, stressing that there can be no substantive zonal executive in place.
Damagum made this known on Thursday while inaugurating the PDP South-South Zonal Caretaker Committee at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja. He explained that the tenure of the former zonal executives had expired, necessitating the appointment of a caretaker committee to oversee the party’s affairs in the region.
“There was no election in the South-South,” Damagum stated. “There can never be a substantive zonal executive in place because there is no room for a vacuum in our constitution. That is why we are inaugurating this caretaker committee to ensure the smooth running of the zone’s activities.”
The newly constituted caretaker committee is chaired by Elder Emma Ogidi, who has been tasked with stabilizing the party and preparing it for the next round of elections.
Damagum expressed confidence that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) remains the dominant political force across the country. He assured members and supporters that the party was on course to reclaim its winning streak and provide credible leadership for Nigerians.
