Non Payment of Salary: Council Workers Now Ride Okada, Menial Jobs to Survive

Delta State: The long delay in the payments of salary to council workers in Delta state has gone to an alarming stage as most workers now ride Okada and do other menial jobs.

Okada RidersAn investigation by Ndokwa Reporters in the three local government areas, of Ndokwa in Delta State, revealed that while many had taken to Okada riding among the men, a lot are into other menial activities to keep their families afloat.

A visit to the council areas office, showed that activities in the councils is now a ghost of itself as many workers no longer come to work.

Our investigations revealed that apart from Okada, and farming, many among the female workers among them, now involve themselves in frying beans cake (Akara), and other pastries.

Some of the workers interviewed said that they had been going to work borrowing to transport, but at the end of the month salary does not come. “This is while we resorted to go into menial activities to survive”. They said.

Speaking further, they said they don’t know when the situation will improve, so they have to negotiate with bike owners to balance the payment as they earn from the business.

Other jobs according to them, is carrying loads in the market with wheelbarrows, which they termed embarrassing, as council workers.

The workers however appealed to the Delta State government under the Leadership of Senator (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa to do something about their salaries of over 8 months.
