AWKA/Nigeria: The wife of the Anambra State Governor, Nonye Soludo, on Friday visited babies born on New Year’s Day at public health facilities in the state, describing the gesture as a reaffirmation of commitment to Anambra’s future.
Mrs. Soludo first visited the Isuaniocha Primary Healthcare Centre in Awka North Local Government Area, where a baby boy was delivered at about 6 a.m. through normal delivery. She later proceeded to the General Hospital Enugu-Ukwu, where a set of twins—a boy and a girl—were delivered at about 10 a.m. via caesarean section.
During the visits, she presented gift items to the newborns and their mothers and interacted with health workers at the facilities.
Speaking to journalists, Soludo, who is the founder of the Healthy Living Initiative, said the annual visit was symbolic, aimed at thanking God for the gift of new lives and reinforcing her commitment to the next generation.
“I do this every year to reaffirm our commitment to securing a prosperous future for the state through the next generation,” she said. “Children represent divine blessings and the hope upon which the future of Anambra will be entrusted.”
She expressed excitement over testimonies from mothers who benefited from the state’s free antenatal and delivery services in public hospitals, including caesarean sections, noting that the policy—now in its third year—was introduced to improve maternal and child health outcomes.
Soludo thanked God for the safe deliveries and prayed that the babies would grow into responsible citizens and a source of pride to Anambra State.
One of the mothers, Mrs. Peace Egwu, said she received adequate care throughout her pregnancy and delivery, expressing gratitude to the state government for its support for mothers and children.
