AGBOR/Nigeria: Leaders of the Nigeria Union of Journalists have been admonished to use their positions to project the interest of their members.
The Chairman of the NUJ, Delta State Council, Comrade Michael Ikeogwu, gave the advice today in Agbor at the inauguration of the new leadership of the Ika Correspondents’ Chapel.
Comrade Ikeogwu who said that the relevance of the union leaders was hinged on the positive impact received by their members, called on chapel leaders not to allow their differences to draw the union back but to endeavour to forge ahead at all cost.
He called for regular meetings in the chapels, warning that any executive that failed to hold congresses less than 18 times in their three-year tenure would face automatic disqualification in line with the resolution of the National Executive Council of the Union.
While advising that members should not allow money to cause crisis and division among them, he expressed disappointment at the attitude of journalists who attend assignments without invitation, saying members should desist from blackmail and all forms of unethical practice.
Comrade Ikeogwu said that the council was repositioning the union in the state for better service delivery and that a new office had been secured for council in Asaba where members outside Asaba could call home.
The chairman informed members that the council had floated a cooperated society and called on them to register, explaining that the arrangement was meant to ease the difficulties associated with raising funds for businesses and other ventures.
Earlier, while formally inaugurating the new executive members, the Vice Chairman of the Council, Comrade Patrick Ochei, advised the leadership of the chapel to work in synergy and abhor bickering.
The Secretary of the Council, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, administered the oath of office on the elected members which include Comrades Maxwell Momah PhD (Chairman), Andy Adaigbe (Vice Chairman), Christian Ogoh (Secretary), Malvin Eyosa (Assistant Secretary), Patrick Gbuchayan (Treasurer), Anita Ale (Financial Secretary and Godwin Obaigbena (Auditor).
In his acceptance speech, the Chairman of the Ika Correspondents’ Chapel revealed that his team had agreed to work in one spirit to build a chapel of pride to everyone.
While imploring his members to consult with him at all times when in doubt, he pledged to carry all along in the administration of the chapel’s activities.
