UGHELLI/Nigeria: Appreciation and commendations have continued to poured in, following the minimum wage approval for primary school teachers in the state by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

Speaking with our correspondent today, the Chairman, Nigeria Union of Local Government Employee, NULGE, Ughelli North Chapter, Comrade Igho Emuophedaro, commended the governor for approving the minimum wage for primary school teachers in the state, describing the gesture as magnanimous.

Emuophedaro, who cleared the air on fears expressed by some local government workers that the approval was for only primary school teachers, disclosed that the approval cuts across board for primary school teachers and local government workers in the state.

“It is a joyful thing. I thank God that our governor has eventually approved the payment of the minimum wage for Primary school teachers and local government workers in the state. I give cudos to him, the primary school teachers and the local government workers.”

“The issue is very clear. It is the local government that pays the teachers salaries, which everyone knows. So, if the governor is saying that he approved 50%, that means, he is assisting the local government with the 50% to enable them pay the primary school teachers the minimum wage. The other 50% will be added by the local government to pay the primary school teachers and the local government workers,” Emuophedaro explained.

He said that the approval came to them with great joy because they had long waited for the minimum wage increase, saying that it would ginger local government workers to be more committed to their work for improved productivity.

The NULGE chapter chairman, who spoke with hope and high expectations, urged workers in the unified local government service to increase their daily productivity to serve as encouragement to the governor.
