ABIA/Nigeria: Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the last general elections, has voiced his support for the nationwide protest scheduled for August. Speaking on Sunday, Obi affirmed that the right to protest is enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.
“The Nigerian Constitution allows room for protest as it is the right of citizens,” Obi declared. However, he cautioned that such demonstrations should remain peaceful and within the law. His remarks came during a courtesy visit to Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, at his country home in Nvosi, Isialangwa South Local Government Area.
Obi identified hunger and hopelessness among the youth as the driving forces behind the protests. He urged Nigerian authorities to listen to the grievances of the protesters and engage with them constructively. “We all have to listen to what Nigerians are going through,” Obi emphasized, commending Governor Otti for his attentive leadership.
Obi also called on security agencies to ensure the safety of protesters while adhering to legal boundaries. “What I will say to security agencies is to manage the situation within the law. We should not strive to be overbearing,” he advised.
Highlighting the global acceptance of peaceful protests, Obi noted, “Protest is allowed everywhere globally. People protest at my house. It is for us to listen to those who are protesting. Engage them; that is what governance is all about.”
