OBIARUKU/Nigeria: Residents of Chinoye Daphey Avenue/Macaulay Agbada Quarters, Obiaruku, in Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State have condemned the high electricity bills distributed by officials of Benin Electricity Distribution PLC (BEDC).
The residents also stated that, apart from the high bills distributed monthly, they (BEDC) suppies” us light three or four times in every month, thereby leaving us in perpetual darkness most of the times.”
Speaking with our correspondent, a resident in the area, Mr. Fidelis Okony, stated that they were disappointed and surprised that those of them who reside in the area of 33 kV line were being denied of electricity.
According to him, the 33 line comes directly from Sapele distributing point which,of course,” if not because of corruption ravaging the country, We living in these areas of Obiaruku supposed to be having light every day.” Okonye alleged that the residents of Chinonye Daphey, Macaulay Agbada, Via Johnson Oriaku areas were denied the normal electricity supply based on their finding that some top management members of Obiaruku BEDC office, – allegedly diverted the 33 line to three powerful businessmen who deal in hotels and motor transport businesses and to the detriments of residents living in the area.
“This is real cheating and an infringement on the right of the people by BEDC and its staff. You cannot imagine that the residents were being supplied light sometimes three or four times in a month and the bill just jumped from N4,500 to N9,800 for a three bedroom flat?
Some people were given bills as high as N14,950, for just a building. What is the justification for this exploitation, he quarried.
The residents, therefore, called on the state government to intervene as ‘the situation is getting worse every day.“We can’t understand why everyone is taking us for granted in this country as if we have no right.”
