ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has condemned the fatal shooting of a young man in Effurun, describing the incident as a grave abuse of power and a direct affront to the sanctity of human life.
The position of the state government was conveyed in a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary, Festus Ahon, who said the governor views the killing of Mena Otidi as unacceptable and inconsistent with the principles of justice and lawful conduct.
Oborevwori expressed deep sympathy to the family of the deceased, noting that no citizen should be subjected to such violence under any circumstance, and reaffirmed that the protection of lives remains a core responsibility of government.
He commended the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force for taking prompt disciplinary action, including approving the dismissal and prosecution of the officers implicated in the incident.
According to the governor, the swift response sends a strong message on accountability and is critical to rebuilding public trust in law enforcement institutions.
He, however, insisted that all individuals connected to the incident, as seen in the widely circulated video, must be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted in line with the law.
The governor assured that the state government would closely monitor the case to ensure that justice is fully served, stressing that accountability must not only be pursued but must be visibly established.
Oborevwori also pledged the support of the state government to the bereaved family, maintaining that no effort would be spared in ensuring the matter is followed through to its logical conclusion.
He urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding, reiterating his administration’s commitment to upholding the rule of law, safeguarding lives and promoting a just society.
