Oborevwori Mourns Gen. Paul Omu, Hails Him as Patriotic Icon and Pillar of Isoko Nation
ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has described the late Major General Paul Ufuoma Omu (rtd) as an exceptional patriot and statesman whose legacy will remain etched in Nigeria’s history.
Oborevwori gave the tribute on Sunday during a condolence visit to the family residence of the deceased in Asaba, where he consoled his widow, Senator Stella Omu, and other members of the bereaved family.
The Governor, visibly moved by the loss, said the passing of General Omu on April 29 was deeply shocking and painful, noting that the nation—particularly the Isoko ethnic nationality—had lost a towering figure in leadership, integrity, and nation-building.
“General Omu was a great Nigerian, a man of uncommon courage and character, and a true son of the Isoko nation,” Oborevwori said. “His life of service, spanning decades, including his time as Military Governor of the defunct South Eastern Region from 1975 to 1978, stands as a testament to his unwavering dedication to the country.”
He extolled the retired Army General’s unwavering commitment to national unity and socio-political development, describing him as a role model and a moral compass for generations of leaders.
“The news of his death came to me as a rude shock. He was a man I held in high esteem. The Isoko people, and indeed Nigeria, have lost one of their finest. We take solace in the indelible footprints he has left behind in service to Delta, the nation, and humanity,” the Governor stated.
Addressing Senator Stella Omu and the family, Oborevwori encouraged them to draw strength from the impactful and fulfilled life their patriarch lived, urging them to uphold his values and legacy.
“We cannot question the will of God. There is a time to be born and a time to die. What matters most is how we live—and General Omu lived a life full of honour and purpose. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten,” he added.
The Governor was accompanied by top government functionaries, including his Chief Adviser, Senator Ighoyota Amori; Chief of Staff, Hon. Johnson Erijo; Isoko South Constituency II lawmaker, Hon. Ferguson Onwo; Isoko South Constituency I representative, Hon. Bino Obowomano; Isoko North legislator, Hon. Bernard Odior; and Commissioner for Lands, Surveys and Urban Development, Chief Emamusi Obiodeh, among others.
The visit, marked by sober reflection and heartfelt tributes, reinforced the enormous respect General Omu commanded across political, ethnic, and generational lines.
