ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has expressed profound grief over the death of renowned Urhobo musician, philosopher and cultural icon, Prof. Johnson Oyibode Adjan, popularly known as “The Ogburine” (Song-Warrior).
The governor described the late music legend as one of the greatest custodians and ambassadors of Urhobo culture whose lifelong contributions to music, indigenous knowledge and cultural preservation left an enduring legacy that would continue to inspire generations.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Governor Oborevwori said the passing of Prof. Adjan was a monumental loss to the Urhobo nation, Delta State and Nigeria as a whole.
He noted that throughout his distinguished career, the celebrated musician used his unique talent and deep philosophical insight to preserve and promote the rich cultural heritage of the Urhobo people through timeless songs that resonated across generations.
According to the governor, Prof. Adjan’s impact transcended the entertainment industry, earning him widespread recognition as a cultural scholar and custodian of indigenous wisdom.
“Prof. Johnson Adjan was more than a musician; he was a custodian of our culture, history, philosophy and values. Through his music, he educated generations, preserved our heritage and strengthened the identity of the Urhobo people,” Oborevwori stated.
The governor said the late musician’s works served as a bridge between the past and the present, helping to preserve the traditions, values and collective memory of the Urhobo people in an era of rapid social change.
He remarked that Prof. Adjan’s unique style of storytelling, cultural advocacy and philosophical reflections elevated him beyond the status of an entertainer and established him as a respected voice in the promotion of indigenous identity and cultural consciousness.
Governor Oborevwori extended his heartfelt condolences to the Adjan family, the Urhobo nation, friends, admirers and members of the entertainment industry over the painful loss.
He prayed for God’s comfort and strength for all those affected by the passing of the revered cultural icon and urged them to take solace in the remarkable legacy he left behind.
The governor noted that although Prof. Adjan had departed, his contributions to the preservation of Urhobo culture and his rich musical heritage would continue to live on in the hearts of his people.
He added that the late legend’s famous signature call, “Isi wadooo… iyaaa…”, would remain an enduring symbol of a life dedicated to culture, wisdom, identity and music.
With his passing, Delta State and the Urhobo nation have lost one of their most celebrated cultural voices, but his songs, teachings and philosophy will continue to echo across generations.
