ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, was on Saturday conferred with the title of Grand Patron of the Ibori Golf and Country Club (IGCC), Asaba, in a colourful ceremony that marked the conclusion of the Governor’s Invitational Golf Tournament.

The event, which brought together elite golfers, business leaders, political dignitaries, and sports enthusiasts from across Nigeria, was held in honour of Governor Oborevwori’s 62nd birthday and served as a celebration of his enduring commitment to sports development and community advancement.

Speaking after receiving the honour, Governor Oborevwori expressed profound gratitude to the club’s leadership and members, saying he was deeply touched by the recognition.

“Indeed, I am deeply humbled by this kind gesture, especially considering the calibre of individuals who are members of this club,” the Governor said, acknowledging the symbolic value of the investiture.

The tournament, which featured competitive rounds of golf and camaraderie among players, highlighted the growing influence of golf in Delta State’s sports and hospitality ecosystem. Governor Oborevwori congratulated all participants and lauded the tournament’s organisers, sponsors, and volunteers for delivering a world-class sporting event.

He described golf as a game that fosters connection and shared passion, noting, “True golfers will travel anywhere just to play. They don’t mind the distance.”

Turning to broader issues, Governor Oborevwori used the opportunity to assure visitors and investors of Delta State’s stability and hospitality, reaffirming that the state remains safe, investor-friendly, and committed to prudent governance. “Delta is a massive construction site,” he said. “When your payment is due and you bring your certificate, we pay you. We don’t wait for FAAC.”

Highlighting his administration’s sports agenda, Oborevwori proudly recalled that Delta won the highest number of gold medals at the 2025 National Sports Festival held in Ogun State. He also celebrated Delta’s dominance in the National Youth Games, which the state has hosted and won consecutively in 2023 and 2024, with plans to host again in 2025 and 2026.

“Our economy remains one of the largest in the country, and we are committed to growth and social investment,” the Governor added.

Earlier, Chief Patrick Ukah, Captain of the Ibori Golf and Country Club, praised Governor Oborevwori’s unwavering support for the club and his broader contributions to sports and infrastructure in the state. Ukah noted that the investiture as Grand Patron was both symbolic and richly deserved.

The Governor’s Invitational Golf Tournament not only showcased Delta’s sporting potential but also reinforced Asaba’s growing status as a hub for leisure, tourism, and elite sports in Nigeria.
