ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has reiterated his commitment to prioritize the health and well-being of the people, aligning with his administration’s M.O.R.E. (Making Okowa’s Roadmap Excel) Agenda. The governor made these remarks during a courtesy visit by the National Executive Council of the Nigerian Optometric Association, led by the National President, Dr. Obinna Awiaka, at the Government House in Asaba.
“We are very happy to receive visitors because our state is peaceful, especially Asaba, the state capital, where numerous conferences have been successfully held,” said Governor Oborevwori. He expressed his willingness to collaborate with well-meaning organizations for the growth and development of Delta State. The governor assured the Optometric Association of the state government’s full support for its upcoming conference in Asaba.
“As a State, we are not taking the issue of health lightly under the M.O.R.E. Agenda,” Governor Oborevwori affirmed. “In my cabinet, we will have a medical doctor overseeing the health sector, ensuring that we give the utmost importance to healthcare.”
The governor also acknowledged the presence of optometrists working at the Asaba Specialist Hospital and pledged to consider the association’s request to employ more of them. He emphasized that the state does not discriminate when it comes to internship opportunities and welcomed non-indigenes to take part.
In response, Dr. Obinna Awiaka, on behalf of the Nigerian Optometric Association, commended Governor Oborevwori for the development initiatives in Delta State. He expressed gratitude for the approval of Call Duty Allowance for their members and the unwavering support for their National Conference.
During the meeting, Dr. Awiaka also appealed to the governor to provide additional employment opportunities for eye doctors and increase internship positions for young medical professionals. He urged for eye care to be included in the Delta State Contributory Health Scheme to enhance access to essential eye services for residents.
The governor’s commitment to enhancing healthcare services in Delta State is poised to have a positive impact on the well-being of the citizens, and his collaboration with various professional bodies signals a dedication to holistic development in the region. As the 2023 Annual General Meeting and Optometry Conference approach, Deltans can look forward to increased awareness and accessibility to proper eye care services in the state.
