Oborevwori Reaffirms Support for Traditional Institutions in Delta State

ISSELE-MKPETIME/Nigeria: Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting the traditional institution, citing its role as a pillar of the state’s cherished customs and a vital component of governance at the grassroots level.

Speaking through his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, FCA, the Governor made this known during the presentation of the Staff of Office to His Royal Highness, Sunday Ubaka Ogboli, the newly installed Obi of Issele-Mkpetime in Aniocha North Local Government Area.

Oborevwori emphasized the importance of traditional rulers as custodians of the people’s traditions and customs. He noted that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)-led government in Delta State would continue to accord due respect to the royal institution, given its critical role in grassroots administration.

“From the joy on the faces of all present here in Issele-Mkpetime, I am convinced this is a momentous occasion in the history of this community,” the Governor said. “I thank you all for the unity of purpose that has made this day possible. The spirit of love and unity seen here must continue to grow, fostering the rapid development of this peaceful community.”

Oborevwori also underscored the government’s respect for traditional systems within the democratic setting, explaining that the traditional institution remains an enduring bedrock of society. He praised the people of Issele-Mkpetime for their peaceful handling of the succession process and urged them to support the new Obi in his reign.

“I appeal to you all to give the Obi the respect, honour, and cooperation he needs to fulfill his duties, which are rooted in the traditions and customs of this community. The respect accorded to a traditional ruler reflects the esteem in which he is held by his people,” Oborevwori added.

The Governor advised the Obi to govern with fairness, love, and transparency, prioritizing security by working closely with law enforcement agencies. “Your Royal Majesty, I implore you to carry out your responsibilities with love, honesty, and the fear of God. Ensure fairness and equity in your reign, as peace and security are essential for sustainable development in any society,” he said.

Oborevwori commended the people for their continued support for his administration and urged them to maintain their peaceful disposition.

In his address, the Chairman of Aniocha North Local Government Area, Hon. Emmanuel Bazim Chinye, called on the new traditional ruler to uphold the values of fairness and transparency in his governance. He congratulated the people of Issele-Mkpetime for preserving their cherished traditions and thanked Governor Oborevwori and his deputy for approving the Staff of Office for the Obi.

The President-General of the Issele-Mkpetime Federated Union, Mr. Oge Okwuka, also appealed to the community to rally around their new leader, describing the Obi as a man of impeccable character and a true embodiment of tradition. He further urged the state government to initiate developmental projects in the community.

Prominent attendees at the event included the Majority Leader of the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Emeka Nwaobi; Senior Policy Adviser to the Governor, Rt. Hon. Funkekeme Solomon; a member of the Delta State Advisory Council, Chief Nkem Okwuofu; and the Deputy Chief of Staff, Sir Christopher Osakwe.
