ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Government has tasked political appointees with improving their understanding of government policies and communicating their impact to citizens as the state approaches the 2027 general elections.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori gave the charge on Wednesday while declaring open a one-day seminar for Special Assistants, Senior Special Assistants and Executive Assistants on political matters, organised by the Senior Political Adviser to the Governor, Senator Emmanuel Aguariavwodo.
Represented by the Chief of Staff, Government House, Sir Johnson Erijo, the governor said political leaders and supporters of his administration must be equipped with accurate information to explain its achievements and programmes across the state.
He said the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Federal Government and the MORE Agenda of the Delta State Government were focused on reforms to strengthen the economy, expand opportunities and promote development.
Oborevwori listed infrastructure projects, including roads, bridges and urban renewal initiatives, alongside investments in education, healthcare, human capital development, youth empowerment, enterprise development and security, as areas of focus for his administration.
“We promised more, and our record speaks for itself,” he said.
The governor also highlighted the relationship between the state and Federal Governments, saying the partnership had created opportunities for Delta.
He urged political stakeholders to focus on sustaining development, stability and the implementation of ongoing projects and programmes, while calling for unity and discipline among appointees and supporters.
Earlier, Aguariavwodo said political appointees had a responsibility to make government policies understandable to ordinary citizens rather than merely announcing programmes.
He said effective communication should demonstrate how government initiatives affect the lives of residents and should be based on information that was visible, relatable and verifiable.
The Senior Political Adviser described the seminar as an opportunity for participants to reflect on the administration’s performance, assess its progress and develop strategies for communicating its work more effectively.
He said the MORE Agenda, which stands for Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms and Enhanced Peace and Security, was designed to improve the lives of Deltans.
In separate goodwill messages, Mr Francis Onuora and the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Kingsley Emu, advised participants to familiarise themselves with relevant facts, figures and statistics concerning the administration’s achievements and challenges.
They cautioned that insufficient knowledge of government activities could expose political appointees to criticism and misinformation.
The seminar featured keynote addresses by the Deputy Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Arthur Akpowowo; the Provost of Southern Delta University, Orerokpe Campus, Prof. Akpovughaye Taiga; and Maxwell Idama Omamuyo.
