Oborevwori’s Defection to APC Is a Patriotic Move to Fast-Track Delta’s Development — State Government

ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Government has defended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as a patriotic and strategic decision aimed at deepening federal collaboration and accelerating development across the state.
In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sir Festus Ahon, the government dismissed criticisms by the Labour Party’s South-South Vice Chairman, Mr. Tony Ezeagwu, calling them misleading and politically motivated. Ahon said the Governor’s move to the ruling party at the federal level was guided by the urgent need to align Delta State with national development priorities.
“Governor Oborevwori’s decision to align with the APC is a strategic and thoughtful move driven by a singular objective: to fast-track Delta State’s development through enhanced collaboration with the federal government. This decision is not about political survival or personal ambition — it is about putting Delta first,” the statement read.
Ahon stressed that the political realignment signaled a new chapter in Delta’s future, with the potential to reshape the 2027 electoral landscape and attract robust federal investment in critical sectors. He said the move was a bold and timely step for a state that cannot afford to remain on the periphery of national politics.
Reacting to claims by Ezeagwu that the defection event was a display of selfish politics, the Governor’s spokesman clarified that the ceremony was a dignified, inclusive political gathering that drew stakeholders from across party lines. “It embodied the Governor’s commitment to unity, inclusiveness, and participatory governance,” he said.
Highlighting the achievements of the Oborevwori administration under the MORE Agenda, Ahon pointed to ongoing strides in infrastructure, youth empowerment, peace-building, and social development across the state. He said the Governor’s popularity is rooted in his credible performance and people-oriented governance, not partisan propaganda.
“The Labour Party should focus on presenting credible alternative policies if it hopes to be taken seriously as an opposition party, rather than disparaging a decision made in the best interest of Delta State,” the statement added.
Ahon also took a swipe at the Labour Party’s internal woes, urging the party to put its house in order before criticizing others. “Tony Ezeagwu should remove the log in his eye before thinking of removing the speck from another person’s. The Labour Party is currently enmeshed in leadership crises and should concentrate on resolving its internal contradictions,” he said.
Governor Oborevwori, according to the statement, remains committed to governing all Deltans, irrespective of political affiliation, and will continue to champion policies that promote unity, good governance, and inclusive growth.
