Rt. Hon. Victor Ochei, Esq., FNSE, former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly

ASABA/Nigeria: Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary should serve as a period for both celebration and reflection on the country’s progress and the challenges confronting its citizens, former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Victor Ochei, has said.

Ochei, who is the Delta North Senatorial District candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), made the observation in his Independence Day message on Thursday, October 1, 2026.

He said Nigeria’s six decades of nationhood had been marked by military interventions, political transitions and economic difficulties, but noted that the country had continued to demonstrate resilience despite the challenges.

According to him, the anniversary provides an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the country’s journey while considering the responsibilities required to secure a more stable and prosperous future.

Ochei identified poverty, insecurity, unemployment, ethnic and religious tensions and declining living standards among the challenges requiring renewed attention from governments and citizens.

He called for greater commitment to the principles of peace, unity, justice, equity, accountability and shared prosperity, saying the welfare and dignity of citizens should remain central to governance.

The Delta North senatorial candidate also urged governments at all levels to ensure prudent management of public resources and strengthen democratic institutions.

He said creating an environment where citizens could live with security, dignity and hope required responsible leadership as well as active participation by the people.

Ochei said Nigeria at 66 needed a renewed sense of national purpose, urging citizens to remain patriotic and committed to the country’s development despite existing difficulties.

He expressed the hope that sustained efforts by governments and citizens would help build a country capable of providing better prospects for present and future generations.

Ochei congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad on the Independence Anniversary and called for continued commitment to building a peaceful, prosperous and just society.
