ASABA/Nigeria: The organisers of the 2019 Ijaw/Itsekiri Peace and Unity Football Tournament had been commended for their Initiative to use competitive sport events to promote peace among communities in the state.
The Deputy Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Christopher Ochor Ochor made the commendation when the Local Organising Committee, LOC, visited him in his office in Asaba on Tuesday, November 26, 2019, to formally invite him and present this year’s jersey to him.
While expressing his support for the competition, he pointed out that peace is a panacea to good economic and social development, and this should be pursued by all persons with good intention for the people.
Rt Hon Ochor stated that for years, especially when it comes to the two communities of Ijaw and Itsekiri, he had always worked towards building a good and enduring relation that will led to developmental of the area, especially when he was an Executive Director on the Board of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC.
The Deputy Speaker called on other organisations and individuals to use every opportunity they Have to promote and preach peace to all for the growth of the state, as peace is a duty for all persons residing in an area, and not only government or their agencies.
Earlier, the Chairman of the LOC, Mr Ken Nwaomucha, had briefed the Deputy Speaker on the plans to host a Successful 2019 Ijaw/Itsekiri Football Peace Competition, which was to foster peace within the area.
In the delegation to the office of the Deputy Speaker, were Mr. Sunday Lucky, the Nigerian Union of Journalist, NUJ, Mr Mike Ikeogwu, who is the contact and Mobilisation Sub Committee Chairman, and Mr. Kelly Kerio.
