ASABA/Nigeria: All is now set for the commencement of the 2017 NUJ Delta State Council Press Week with various activities lined up to make the week-long event spectacular and memorable, which among the events of award to be bestowed on some Nigerians, including the State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa.
Briefing Journalists in Asaba, the Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, Comrade Michael Ikeogwu said the theme of the Press Week Annual Lecture slated for 10am next Tuesday at Labour House, Asaba is the Role of the Press in Managing the Lessons of Recession for a Wealthier Delta State.
According to Comrade Ikeogwu, the Lecture will be delivered by a renowned human right activist, anti-corruption crusader and founder of an NGO ”Women Arise”, Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin and under the distinguished chairmanship of a former Delta State Commissioner for Information, Barrister Chike Ogeah.
He highlighted eminent personalities to grace the events to include Governor of Delta State, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa as the Special Guest of Honour, Deputy Governor, Barr Kingsley Otuaro as Guest of Honour, the Rt. Hon Speaker of Delta State House of Assembly, Sheriff Oborevwori and Hon Festus Agas, the Secretary to the Delta State Government, as Special Guests.
He said the Hon Commissioner for Information, Delta State, Mr Patrick Ukah and the National President of NUJ, Comrade Waheed Odusile are the Chief Hosts while himself Comrade Michael Ikeogwu is the Host
The Chairman disclosed that the Press Week will also feature Awards Presentation, Investiture of Patrons and Gala Nite beginning from 7.00 pm on Tuesday, 12th December, 2017.
He announced other activities lined up for the Press Week to include Sensitization Campaign, Visit to Sick Members of the Union on Thursday and Friday this week , and Novelty Football Match at 4pm Squash Club, Asaba on Monday, 11th December, 2017.
Comrade Ikeogwu described the NUJ Press Week as one of the Council’s highly celebrated events with the aim of promoting the ideals of the journalism profession and also take stock of how members fared within the year under review.
According to him, the Week is also an avenue to relate and interact with all stakeholders including those in government, politicians across political parties, market women, road transport workers, professional bodies, and others in public and private sectors in a conducive atmosphere with a view to repositioning the society for the wellbeing of all.
He also urged practicing journalists from all media houses in the state to accord priority to the NUJ Press Week.
